"Come to the edge," he said. "We can't, we're afraid!" they responded. "Come to the edge," he said. "We can't, we will fall!" they responded. "Come to the edge," he said. And so they came. And he pushed them. And they flew. — Guillaume Apollinaire
This painting carries me back to a moment in Maui, standing at the cliff’s edge where danger and beauty converged. The tide had turned, waves crashed with unexpected force, and what first appeared serene became suddenly precarious. In that instant, I felt both the fragility of life and its wild splendour—how quickly we can be swept from safety into risk, and how aliveness often lives in that very threshold.
Through layered collage and textured surfaces, I worked to echo that experience: the rough cliff face meeting the smooth expanse of sea, fiery bursts of red against the calm of teal. Come to the Edge is not only about cliffs and waves—it is about the courage to step forward when fear says hold back, and the possibility of flight when we least expect it.
